Dark-Toned Space Transformation : Case Studies on Renovating Hong Kong’s Old Buildings

This 500 sq ft two-bedroom apartment on Hong Kong Island demonstrates how interior design transcends the limitations of old architecture. The designer @de_stijl_interior_design reimagined the angular layout, transforming irregular walls into functional assets: two separate bedrooms, a walk-in closet carved from awkward corners, and repurposed bay windows as flat surfaces. Every inch maximizes efficiency.

A dark palette anchors the space, blending wood, stone, and metal with precise textural balance through matte finishes. Traditional overhead lighting is replaced by concealed illumination – under floating cabinets, within stone joints, and behind metal grilles – creating ambient reflections that preserve the moody sophistication while ensuring navigational clarity.
